A two-day backpacking trip in San Bernardino National Forest is a unique experience due to the desert nature of the trail. This was part of the Highlander Adventure trip.

The Highlander Adventure, founded in Croatia, organizes a global series of long-distance hiking events. Most of the hikes take place in Croatia, Europe, and other parts of the world. This year marks the first time that they have arranged hikes in the USA.

The first USA hike took place in Big Bear Lake and consisted of three different backpacking trips lasting 5 days, 3 days, and 2 days. I wanted to find out what it takes to complete these hikes, in case I ever decide to go backpacking outside of the USA.

Why would you go with Highland Adventure?

One of the main reasons you would choose a Highland Adventure trip is that you don’t have to worry about planning. They will plan everything, including food and campsite for the trip. Note that there won’t be any guide while hiking; you will hike as if you had planned and hiked yourself. You will follow the path they have set and reach a designated campsite where you can meet other fellow hikers. With this trip, you can enjoy both solitude while hiking and social gatherings at the end of the hiking without worrying about planning or safety.

One of the highlights is that you will be treated to great food and activities at the campsite, including evening presentations and morning yoga.

Below are some of the things that have been arranged by the company:

  • Hiking route
  • Food for the trip and at campsites
  • Map, both paper & GPX file of the route
  • Safety. You have to check in at each campsite at the end of day
  • Optional activities at the campsite

What is not arranged

  • No guide
  • Travel arrangements to/from the first day of check-in place

What is your responsibility?

  • You have to plan just like you would for backpacking — pack all the gear you need except for food (unless you need to bring your own).
  • You hike your own hike, i.e., since there are no guides, you hike just the way you want, take your own time, and reach the designated campsite.

Of course, this will cost money. It will be more expensive than doing your own planning, but still cheaper than going on a guided trip.

Definitely, I would go with this company if I am not familiar with the places where I hike, especially in Europe. This arrangement gives me the solitude that I want during the hike, and at the same time, I do not need to worry about route planning and food.

Check out their website for more info.
